Certain crops need their blooms to be pollinated by bees or they will not produce any fruit. Wild bee colonies have been steadily declining as mites and more recently, colony collapse disorder, have wiped out the wild hives. In addition, the numbers of beekeepers are dwindling. As such, farmers are left with a large predicament. Farmers need bees, and there are none. Thus, as beekeepers, we realize the solution is providing pollination services.
We are currently supplying 70 hives for vegetable and fruit pollination in Middlesex and Richmond Counties. These are large operations with several hundred acres in cantalopes, cucumbers, watermelons, and squash. Next year we anticipate an increase in hive requirements by one of the growers we suport.
If you are interested in our services, please let us know by November each year for the following spring and summer. Bees remain in short supply and a commitment in the late fall (for the following spring) will help us have bees on hand for you when you need them.
Simply, pollination services are the act of moving beehives from one farm to another to pollinate crops. For a small fee, farmers can negotiate with the provider to establish the number of hives needed, a start date, and the total length of the pollination period. Ultimately, without pollination there are no crops to sell, so pollination is an important and necessary service!
